I joined the kids from Sonstraal on their annual missions trip to Botswana. This year, I’d be going just to document. Video and stills – number one goal being to get everyone to stop looking at the camera . I’m finally (sort-of) finished with the shots, and these 30 are my favourite. To see more, check out the (terribly pixelated) Facebook album. I really tried to get photos that tell some sort of story. I didn’t know what that story would be before I shot each photo, but I do feel that these shots say something.

The story about the poverty and need in African countries has been told again and again.

I think that the thing that struck me the most was the…well…the OK-ness. The schools in Botswana rock. Although I can’t agree with their methods, they are doing something right that we’re not. Furthermore, the kids are happy. They play games, they laugh. They are mischievous. They are real children, playing real games in their real street. And the scenery around their streets aren’t all that bad either. In fact, it’s damn pretty.

I hope that these shots tell you something about our journey too.
